This exhibition explores the recent George and Ann Dannatt Gift to Southampton City Art Gallery, which includes paintings, drawings, sculptures and prints by key figures associated with the St Ives Group of Artists in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, including Denis Mitchell, Terry Frost, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham and John Wells.

The display takes its title from a work by John Wells of 1955 and evokes his statement that he ‘wished to paint the warmth of the sun’ and other sensations offered in the natural scene. Additional works from the gallery’s permanent collection have been displayed alongside the gift as a reminder of longer and wider preoccupations with similar themes.
