Found Cities, Lost Objects – Southampton City Art Gallery

Found Cities, Lost Objects

3 Feb – 6 May 2023

Curated by Turner Prize winner and  internationally renowned artist Lubaina Himid, CBE, Found Cities, Lost Objects invites us, through the works of female contemporary artists, to consider the experiences of women in the city.

With works from the Arts Council Collection and Southampton City Art Gallery’s collection, this collaborative exhibition encourages us to bring our own experiences of the urban environment.  It acknowledges the privileges which allow some women to roam freely, while also considering the boundaries that may curb the experiences of others.

This is an exhibition which acknowledges conversations between audiences and artists at its heart, exchanging observations, memories and imaginings, to give us all a greater sense of self and consider our own relationships with the city.

Artists featured include Lisa Milroy, Magda Stawarska-Beavan, Elizabeth Wright, Cornelia Parker, susan pui san lok and Helen Cammock.

An Arts Council Collection Touring Exhibition.

Found Cities Lost Objects: Women in the City

Billboard Project

Southampton City Art Gallery  has partnered with Arts Council Collection and ‘a space’ arts to show the work of three female Southampton based artists on digital billboards across the city.

The artists were chosen by Turner-prize winning artist, Lubaina Himid CBE, and their stunning artworks will draw on themes from the exhibition, Found Cities, Lost Objects: Women in the City, also curated by Himid and currently on show at Southampton City Art Gallery.

The three artists who will have their artwork proudly displayed on the digital billboards from 2 April are: Ellen Gillett, Sarah Filmer and Olana Light.
