Rise and Shine – Again
Acrylic on canvas
While marvelling at the sea and the city, plaques saying ‘Talk to us’ are a reminder that many see the view, but due to individual experiences, circumstances and intentions, perceive it very differently. Remember the history, the invasions, the Blitz, and recent health troubles. Think of the present, the future, your great resilience and how dawn looks so cool on you.
‘Thousands rouse as day breaks
Turning over to begin their gradual rise
Slowly, the sleeping city wakes
Dreaming still in many eyes.
My distant view, familiar places
With strange excitement I recognise
I see and know their miniature faces…
Sound increases, motion races
Of children, women, men
Southampton, sea city of many trials
Rise and shine… again.’
