Virtual Open Exhibition for City Art Gallery – Southampton City Art Gallery

Virtual Open Exhibition for City Art Gallery

9 Jun 2020

Southampton City Art Gallery will still host its 2020 biennial Open Exhibition ‘In Search of a New World’, now in a new digital format.

‘In Search of a New World’ is part of the Mayflower 400 programme. Launching on 15 August 2020, this digital exhibition will coincide with the anniversary of the day the Mayflower and her sister ship the Speedwell left Southampton. The City has been at the forefront of many such world changing moments, the consequences of which have been both positive and negative. Southampton’s Mayflower 400 programme seeks to explore all aspects of this story and to broaden understanding about all peoples who have come to, or through, Southampton in search of a new life, and those impacted by this migration.

For the Open Exhibition, artists are invited to respond to the themes of journey, migration and the sea in any way. These themes are the heart of our Mayflower 400 programme, encouraging communities and our cultural leaders to creatively explore Southampton’s unique position as Gateway to the World.

The new format for this year will ensure the exhibition goes ahead despite the uncertainties of reopening our cultural venues, and so all potential visitors can still engage and explore art while remaining safe. Exhibition entries remain open to residents of Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Wiltshire and Dorset and successful entrants will be showcased in the new digital exhibition format. For more details see:

Councillor Satvir Kaur, Cabinet Member for Homes, Communities and Culture, said: “I’m thrilled this exhibition is still going ahead in the safest way possible, offering opportunities to local artists and a chance for us all to fully explore Southampton’s Mayflower 400 story from all perspectives. We have such a breadth of talent within our city and across the region, and we look forward to receiving people’s submissions. While this is an exciting digital exhibition, we cannot wait to welcome everyone back to our much-loved museums and gallery when it is safe to do so.”
