Joanna Rose Tidey is a Southampton-based artist whose artworks, inspired by the natural world, can often be found on junction boxes, shipping containers and walls within the city and across the region.
Her paintings are unapologetically vibrant and colourful. She has a refreshingly anarchic approach to painting walls and commissions; little preparation is made in terms of sketching, and she leans into gathering whatever equipment is within reach and begins painting, adapting and editing the work as it develops in front of her.
Joanna still uses her first watercolour paint box, given when she was a child by an early creative influence, ‘Nanny’. Her Nanny’s love of gardening inspired Joanna’s first paintings and led to a love of wildlife and nature which continues through her artwork today. She can be frequently found out and about, painting the natural world and exploring zoos and wildlife parks with her children.
Joanna has built up a strong relationship with her community by creating artwork trails. ‘Nature all around us’ was initiated by ‘Friends of Bitterne Train Station’ and launched by Chris Packham. The self-initiated ‘Sholing Safari’ which was forged during lockdown.
After gaining a degree in Fine Arts from the University of East London, Joanna has completed many commissions and is included in public and private collections both in the UK and abroad. You can also find Joanna’s work at the New Forest Wildlife Park, Longleat Safari Park, and she is often a participating artist at live paint events such as Southampton’s Multi-Stories project and the Southend City Jam.
