A Day of Art and Culture in Southampton

Southampton has a fascinating blend of art and culture, most of which is free to visit. Making Southampton a very affordable place to experience some amazing cultural activities, or to soak up the creative atmosphere in our art galleries. So, if you’re looking for a low cost day out with the family or to share some time with friends, here’s a great itinerary for things to do in Southampton for art and culture buffs.
Morning:
Start your day at Southampton City Art Gallery, located in one side of the Civic building, next to the Central Library. The gallery is free to visit and houses an impressive collection of over 5,000 works of art, including pieces from the Renaissance to more contemporary art, with exciting visiting exhibitions and artworks from other major galleries and art institutions. Find out what exhibitions or activities are on at the gallery.
Next, head around the corner to Guildhall Square for a visit to John Hansard Gallery, known for its contemporary visual art exhibitions and engaging programs. The gallery itself is free to visit but do check the gallery’s schedule for any special exhibitions, events or activities.
Lunch:
Grab lunch at one of the nearby cafes in the Cultural Quarter. It’s a great area to relax and soak in the atmosphere.
Afternoon:
God’s House Tower: This historic venue often hosts cultural events and exhibitions, showcasing a mix of contemporary and historical art.
Also, keep an eye out for pop-up art exhibitions and installations in the Westquay shopping center, organized as part of the Soton Showcase initiative.
Evening:
Wrap up your day with a cultural performance. Check if there’s a play or concert at MAST, the Mayflower Theatre or the Turner Sims Concert Hall for a delightful evening.
