In Focus: John Salt (1937 – 2021)
John Salt trained at Birmingham and The Slade Schools of Art before travelling to Baltimore on a scholarship. In New York in the late 1960s he found himself in the forefront of the new and popular Photorealist Movement.
Adopting the subject of abandoned wrecked vehicles and rundown trailer parks, he applied his paint by airbrush through hundreds of hand-cut, lace-like stencils. He returned to the UK in 1980 though continued with his American motifs.
A-OK Auto was purchased for Southampton’s permanent collection from his solo exhibition The Hidden Hand: John Salt in 2004.
This commemorative exhibition is by courtesy of the artist’s family and Plus One Gallery.
