The Main Hall features a rotating display that showcases Southampton City Art Gallery’s internationally renowned permanent collection. This year’s installation focuses on some of the individuals and organisations whose generosity has left an indelible mark on the city’s collection.
From work hung in the home of our philanthropic founder Councillor Robert Chipperfield, to that acquired through forward-thinking ventures like the Contemporary Art Society, we pick out some the strands woven into our rich history. On your visit you will see art from the last 350 years.
There are historical European pictures by Camille Corot and Jan Davidsz de Heem, modern British paintings by Graham Sutherland and Prunella Clough and more recent work by Rachel Whiteread and and John Hoyland. Through our new display we explore the breadth of the generous contributions that have made Southampton’s collection what it is today.
If you are coming to the Gallery to see a specific work, we suggest you contact us ahead of your visit to check if it is on display (see ‘contact us’ at the bottom of the page).
