OPEN – MAYFLOWER – Rachel Reynolds – Southampton City Art Gallery

Rachel Reynolds

Passenger through Time

Original drawings and watercolours printed onto archival quality paper

Drawings of the Mayflower ship and watercolour flowers, combined with an 1871 Southampton map and 1835 Burmese map symbolise aspects of my family heritage with significance to Southampton, journeys and travel. My great, great grandfather came to Southampton to study in 1871 before embarking by boat to India and then Myanmar (Burma) where he settled. Two generations later my family travelled by boat from Myanmar to the UK. Years later Southampton became my home. The drawings of the Mayflower ship, combined with Cherry blossom from Myanmar (Burma) and the Mayflower wild flower have been printed onto a collage of the Southampton and Burmese maps. The surrounding border is a recent photograph taken from a walk on Kingsbridge Lane, Southampton.
