This painting is a reminder of the journeys undertaken by the crews of the steamships travelling throughout the world and in the case of the Union Castle Line mostly from Southampton to Africa.
My Grandfather only lived to the age of 42 and I first saw this image of him in the Southampton archives. This was an exciting discovery and has led to years of research into his life, which I knew nothing about.
They were at sea for weeks at a time in harsh conditions especially for the stokers fuelling the engines. Although my Grandfather was an engineer, his short life was an indication of the conditions in the engine room. He avoided mines and bombs transporting troops in WW1 and he survived a mutiny. This is artwork is to appreciate them all.
