Peter Symons
jetty1-projection
Oil on canvas
Symons’ painting is based on a multi-projector installation of a disused jetty near Keyhaven on the south coast of England. The film installation interrogates the place and times where seawater was collected and the salt extracted by people from the Iron Age through to the 17th century. The salt was then transported along the salt ways through the New Forest.
This painting involves capturing moving image from the film installations as they are projected directly onto the 2D surface in his studio. The work evokes the layering and traces of time and place, as well as transposing the moving image onto a static two-dimensional surface.
