5: LGBT+ History Month: featured artworks from the City’s Collection

28 Feb 2021

For the final day of LGBT+ History Month, we are sharing another artwork chosen and explored by members of the LGBTQ+ community. Today, we’re sharing Jenny Baynham’s choice:

“My chosen artwork is ‘Iris O2’ by Lucy Ash. This resonates with me because the background to this work is Hate Crime within the LGBTQ community. I’m a gay woman who had a gay brother who was killed for being gay. This work is a powerful reminder of the destruction & devastation that hate crime has caused my family, friends and me.”

Iris 02 continues a body of work Lucy Ash created to highlight LGBTQ+ issues. The catalyst for these works was the violent homophobic murder of Jenny’s brother Ian Baynham in 2009.

You can read more about Iris 02 on the artist’s website here.
