Day Bowman

Citadel 2

Oil, charcoal and conté on canvas

Growing up in a holiday-destination, seaside town it is not surprising that much of my work has referenced the sea, the beach and littoral. These canvases echo the marks, lines and shapes that we made in the wet, grey sand of our home town beach: thus the canvas becomes the beach that acted as the canvas of my childhood.

Through colour, scribbled lines and drip marks I have attempted to capture the tides, the expanses of sand and the occasional gleam of sunshine. Along with scratched messages to the gods, our childhood castles were built to keep out the marauding tidal waters; these images represent something more sinister questioning our notion of place, identity and belonging.
